Is it legal to be gay in thailand? I'm a lesbian and im going on vacation to Thailand. Just wondering if it is legal to be gay in thailand and if anyone can tell me anything about the gay/lesbian community.
also is it a bad idea to wear a rainbow bracelet or something like that? |
| I believe the only place it's not illegal is countries using Islamic law. How would anyone know anyway when you come here. It is more open society then in the west. You have nothing to worry about. |
Are people openly gay in Thailand without people turning any heads? I'm just wondering cause they are stereotyped to be gay and I was thinking of moving there with my boyfriend |
I have many Thai friends, and it seems that people in the larger cities (Bangkok, Chiang Mai, etc) and resorts do not have a problem with gay people and there is little-to-no discrimination. You may turn some heads if you visit smaller, more rural towns, but the chances of you being attacked or something is highly unlikely...Thai people are very friendly.
The country does have something called "kathoey," commonly known as "ladyboy" which is a male-to-female transgender person. From what my Thai friends and other friends who have visited tell me, they co-exist peacefully alongside everyday citizens; after all, a sizeable number of men and women seeking sex changes usually get their procedures done in Thailand (Bangkok is known as the "Sex Change Capital of the World and maybe you've even recently seen in the headlines that one of it's airlines has even started specifically recruiting kathoey to serve as air hostesses)!
So no worries! You will be fine in the larger cities and touristy/resort places, but at most, may turn a few heads when in rural areas. |
How do the straight Thai men feel about the ladyboys and gay guys in Thailand? since there are so many out gays and out ladyboys |
We let them live the life they choose, as long as they do not destroy our society.
Living in a democratic form of government means freedom of want, fear and etc.
It is just a pity - but let is be! |
Is there a gay/transvestite university in Thailand? I heard from my gay friends that there are such one university exclusively for gays/transvestites in Thailand. Can you please give me more details about it or the web link? Thank you! |
www.thaiuniversities.com
You have to search a little bit,but there are many categories..There is one for that univercity... |
Question: Gay Thailand? I was talking to a friend of mine. She has a friend (girl) from Thailand and she says that every boy in Thailand is either gay or transgender. I kinda don't believe in this, but I think she is rather exaggerating.
Not trying to offend someone, just curious. :) |
| Are you fu*king dumb of course not all of them are gay. She is just exaggerating ;) |
Why there are lots of gay in Thailand and Philipines? why there are lots of gay in Thailand and Philipines??? it's so different from others countries...There are not lots of gay in Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, and other asian countries...why it has to be in that countries?? |
Homosexuality is pretty much ingrained in society (and I speak from experience, having been born and lived in the Philippines all my life; I have visited Thailand recently and found our cultures having very many similarities) and there is NOT a rabid homophobia against gays and lesbians, but a quiet hushed secretive one. (mainly because of the Catholic church's stand, which counts more than 85% of the population as members)
Homosexuals practically bombard local television and movies so they are definitely "in the mainstream", and in fact, some have even gone all the way to hold legislative and executive positions. (Internal homophobia is more pronounced as the level in government goes higher)
I would say Philippine society is way more tolerant than most of our other Asian counterparts.
This openness may account for many homosexuals to be "out"; I doubt the number is significantly less elsewhere in Asia, it's just that we are freer to be who we are in the Philippines. |
Gay expats living in Thailand? Can you please tell me pros and cons living in Thailand from gay point of view? Straights, please do NOT answer. Thanks. |
Sorry Hats I am straight but I want to answer you from a perspective from someone that lives here and knows the scene.
Every guy in Thailand that has a Thai girlfriend will have friends that are either gay or ladyboys. Gays make up as much as 25% of the entire population here.
The pros are obvious, there is no where else in the world where gay people are more accepted than in Thailand. Gays are part of the mainstream society here and are not looked at as being different or out of place.
So you have a freedom from any kind of persecution you might find in western countries. You are free to live your own lifestyle and will never be bothered.
I see gay foreigners here all the time and it is so normal, you will fit right it. Whether holding hands in public or anything else, you will never feel out of place.
The top Thai clubs are all a melting pot of gays, lesbians, ladyboys and straights, and I have never been anywhere in the world and had a better time clubbing or getting along with people than here.
People here are so open and friendly to be themselves, and they do not let anything get in the way.
The only complaint I have heard from gay thai friends is that in the workplace they feel they may be paid less than there straight counterparts and there are never enough foreign gay men to go around.
Although sad but true, even though the pay is less, you will find gays and ladyboys working in every store, restaurant, field that you would find straight people working and it is a fact of life anywhere you go, to see this.
Whether it is a ladyboy helping me to pick out a new perfume for my girl or a gay man helping me with a dress shirt and tie, it is all very normal.
The only CONS you will find will be from westerners who think really backwards, the same way it is in the US for instance. There will always be that handful that can only think in one dimension but not the Thais.
Thailand is very sexually tolerant and that is why Thailand is the only place in the world I feel you can live and totally be yourself, without being told or held accountable for your sexual orientation.
I think if you visited Thailand you would realize there could be no other place in the world to enjoy yourself the way you really feel you should be able to.
And as far as straights, not all straights are the same. Living in Thailand a few years, I have many gay friends and ladyboy friends who are more genuine and human than any westerners I have ever met.
I am quite certain you will find your paradise here. |
Is it safe to visit Thailand as a single super-hot GAY black man? Will Thai women hit on me all the time? Thai guys look pretty cute and LBs look amazing, but I' just don't dig chicks. |
Well you will be very popular in Pattaya where they have just what you are looking for.
Boy's town and LB's around every corner.
Thailand is safer than your own Country and you will have no problems because of your colour.
Yes you might get plenty of Thai Ladies hit on you but just tell them your Gay and you will have no problem |
Why are so many foreign english teachers in Thailand gay!? especially teachers from Europe or America. Many times they were caught by a police because of sexual crime. We are not welcome you!! |
| Yes I think its terrible that many of these teachers are more interested in exploiting impoverished boys than teaching English. I think the government needs to do more to get these guys off the streets and do thorough background checks on these teachers before allowing them in the country. Guyren must be protected at all times from possible pedophiles. |
